 Tesla, Inc. is an American electric vehicle and clean energy company founded in 2003 by Elon Musk, JB Straubel, Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning, and Ian Wright. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto, California.

The early years of Tesla were focused on developing the Tesla Roadster, which was the world's first electric sports car. The Roadster was introduced in 2008 and was based on the Lotus Elise platform, but with an all-electric powertrain.
